The House That Aaron Built

It all started out with this thought that the kids need something to do in the back yard. Then there was lots of dreaming and scheming, and finally a plan. We ended up building this great "play-date" house for the kids and the best part is we did it cheep. There were lots of people that participated in building this thing and I think I will acknowledge them right now.

We put a nice deep drain hole in the sandbox, which has already come in handy.

The ceder siding came from our first house, it's amazing what a wire brush will do.

The Past 3 Months

Hey there, it has been quite some time since we posted anything on this blog of ours. So I thought I would load it up with some of the things we have been doing over the past few months. It has been a lot of fun, and we have been able to share some great times with friends and family.

Robyn and Paige and Payton visited our good friends the Gerbers in Penticton. I was at a men's camp at Rock Ridge Canyon while they stayed in Penticton and then we met up in Osoyoos, and headed south to the Orogon Coast.

Payton got very good at hauling his little suitcase around. He was just testing out it's off road abilities at this time.

We stayed at this little house on the coast, and Paige got to share a room with her cousin. Here is Paige showing of her ability to hang her clothes in her closet.

We had loads of fun on the beach.

Here are our kids after they have tamed some of the local marine life.

We had some great kite flying weather in Hood River.

Paige had her first gymnastics performance. Her class did a number to a song called Clean My Room, and they all had to dress up mismatched and messy, it was a great time.

I got rid of my nemisis tree in our back yard.

We have been spending a lot of time out at Fort Steele this year. The kids love it and I am finally to the age where I do find the history interesting. I must be growing up or something.

Well there you have it. I hope to update this thing more often this summer. So keep checking back.

Robyn brought these cool little swings into the Flower shop. We don't have any tree branches appropriate for hanging a swing from, so in the basement it goes! Paige has only fallen off three times.

Horse'n Around

So today we made horses... although Payton didn't always use his for that. They are pretty fun and the best part; when the paper horse face falls off you can still play hockey with them.

Since the Last Time We Spoke...

So it has been a little while since we have put up some pics. So here are a whole bunch at once. Strap in and hold on!

We have been having a lot of fun these days as is clearly seen on Payton's face.

It is always amazing to me the fun one can have taking pictures of one's kids during the most normal activities, like snack time.

A little early spring gardening. They are actually just watering the plants, and doing an awesome job of it I might add.

The kids are having so much fun with their wagon. They pulled it up and down our street, and I have a really great video of it that I will try to share with you later.

Snow Day at Grandma & Papa's

So last week something happened here that hasn't happened since Christmas... it snowed. The kids were up at their Grandparents home and had a great time in the sticky white stuff. Here are some pictures from their fun in the snow.

Bowling with Friends

Paige and her cousin Kayla got to go bowling the other day for their friend Finn's b-day. They had a great time although Paige was quite upset when she wouldn't hit any pins, she's a little competitive I think. Here are some pictures that tell some of the story.

"Let's see who is in the lead. What the heck! How do you read this thing? Let's get a third opinion."

"Knocking all five pins down with the first ball is a strike, worth 15 points, which means the score achieved by the player's first two balls of the next frame or frames are added to his or her score for the strike. They are also, of course, counted in their own frames, so in effect they count double. A player who takes two balls to knock all the pins down gets a spare, which means the first ball of the next frame counts double. When a bowler bowls two strikes in succession, within a game, the bowler has scored a "double". The count in the frame where the first strike was bowled is left blank until the bowler makes his or her first delivery of the next frame. When a double has been bowled, the count for the first strike is 30 points plus the value of the pins bowled down with the first ball of the frame following the second strike. When a bowler bowls three strikes in succession, within a game, the bowler has scored a "triple" (also called a "turkey"). In scoring three successive strikes, the bowler is credited with 45 points in the frame where the first strike was bowled. As in ten-pin, if either of these happen in the last frame, the player gets to take one or two shots at a re-racked set of pins immediately. A perfect score is 450, which is probably attained less frequently than perfect tenpin scores are, because of the greater opportunity in five-pin for splits (arrangements of the remaining pins in which there are spaces large enough for a ball to pass through without touching a pin). Does that make more sense?"

And of course, snacks and cake after the game. I am glad to see they are not hitting the juice too hard.

Ground Control to Mommy... Come in Mommy

So we got to go to the airport the other day and pick Robyn up. She was returning from a three day adventure with her sister to Edmonton, Ab. We were joined by the cousins for the grand welcome at arrivals.

Mum's Away

So Robyn has gone to a gift show in Edmonton for three nights, and the kids and I have been fending for ourselves. It is a funny thing when a wife goes away, you just don't quite know what to do with yourself sometimes. My friend and look-alike Tyler noted the same thing when his wife goes away. All in all we are doing good here, it has had its moments for sure but it has been pretty good. (Although, I think that Payton is getting some molars in on the bottom.) Some Revamping... again

Points of Contact

A few years back, when Robyn and I were just married, we went on a caving trip in Horne Lakes Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. It was my first time caving and we had chosen to do the extreme adventure tour, which of course came with a guide. We were going to journey to the depths of the earth and see dwarfs and dragons and stalagmites. It was going to be awesome! At this point in my life I was an enthusiastic but slightly under-educated adventurer. I was not totally unlearned in the ways of hiking and outdoorsy type stuff, I had just never heard anyone put into words the things one should do to prolong one's life on this planet when exploring the underworld. Our guide shared some advise with us as we prepared to enter the cave system through a little tiny metal door at the end of the muggie trail that we had been hiking: always keep your helmet on, don't urinate in the cave, stay with the guide so you don't fall down into a bottomless pit, (and this one that I have entitled this entry with) always maintain two POINTS OF CONTACT. This simply meant that if we wanted stay balanced and safe while walking in this lightless world of mystery that has slippery rocks and uneven ground it was in our best interest to have a hand reaching out and resting on something while we moved a foot. I have recognized this to be true in other forms of travel. Using a hiking pole while climbing a mountain, or an ice axe while climbing a wall of frozen water, or hanging on to the rail in a subway car or bus. I find that for terrain that is not part of my regular routine it is usually best that I stick to the 2 or 3 points of contact guide-line.
I have started to think about what the implications of this might be for my walk in this life, and here are some thoughts I have had.

As people we should be seeking out others who would help steady us as we journey forward.
In building new friendships we must be using multiple points of contact in getting to know each other.
When we venture into the world of familiar with long term friends it is then safe to walk with the confidence that comes from knowing.

For instance, if I am going to meet with someone new I usually talk to them two or three times before the meeting; once to introduce myself, once to set up a time to meet, and once to confirm that the meeting is still a go. If I am meeting with someone familiar I usually just talk with them once to set up the meeting and I know that I will wee them there.
I see this working out in the world of business as well. Companies are always trying to maintain as many points of contact with us as possible through fliers and commercials, and all the other things that go on in marketing. It is fairly cold and impersonal for the most part, but we see it non the less.
Perhaps this is something we could use in the world of church. We need to recognize that we are Christ's ambassadors and that he is miraculously using us to reveal himself to the world. The more we as christians reach out to people in our communities who don't yet know Christ, the easier it becomes for those people to trust that He loves them too. I am sure that this could carry on in a number of directions, and I hope that it does.

It is the beginning of a new year, and let me tell you the family Hansen is gearing up for a good one. Robyn just finished her first month as part owner of a flower shop here in Cranbrook, and I am officially unemployed...

Aaron's Kokanee Encounter (part 1)

Though you may think that this entry is about a bad experience with a local beer, I assure that it is not. This is the story of my adventure on the Kokanee Glacier near Nelson B.C. My good friend Justin and I packed up our gear and headed for a spot known as "the keyhole." Our objective on this trip is to climb the mountain on the Kokanee beer can, Gray's Mountain. Our adventure began as any good adventure should... in the dark. We planed to spend 2 nights on the glacier, and wanted to beat the heat by getting an early start on Saturday. This meant a late night drive up the 20km dirt road and spending a night sleeping in the parking lot. Good times!This happens to be prime time for mosquitoes in the area and they were out to kill. We finally killed all the ones that got in our tent and turned in for the night.
Next morning, hundreds of the little blood suckers were swarming the outside of our tent! It was retarded. We had a solid breakfast of bacon and scrambled eggs, with a bran muffin and some fresh Creston cherries, packed up our stuff and hit the trail.
The following pictures show some of the amazing country we traveled in that day.

So after about an hour of walking in the trees we reached the alpine meadows, leaving the mosquitoes behind us... but having to deal with the black flies.

The place we were going to spend the next two nights at is called the keyhole. It is this low point on the mountain range that I am pointing at (above). There are 2 basic ways to get to it, the shortest of which is the direct route straight up the slope. This is our choice for sure!
Justin, who has been a mountain guide and has done this trip a few times, tells me here that in trying to get some last minute details for our trip came across a blog where a guy was saying that he was going to train for the next few months to prepare himself for going to the keyhole... I am not impressed by this as I am NOT in great shape. But I am a man, and I will not retreat!

and at about this point my legs have started cramping up... only 500 meters to go.

OUCH!

After some severe grunting, and perhaps a little profanity, we reached the top. It was such a relief, and even though my face is saying something completely different, I am ecstatic!

After an afternoon nap and some dinner it was time to take my first steps on the glacier.

We hiked to the a near by peak, which only took us about 10 minutes from our camp, and got some new perspective on where we came from that day.

I have to point out that this part of the snow shoot that I have circled in red looks a lot like Sherlock Holmes.

Well, it has been a long day for sure, time turn in and get some rest. I am sure that my first time trying to sleep in a bivy will be great...

A Quick History Concerning the Hansens

The following is an attempt to relate to you the reader a little of what has been going on in our lives these past many months. It will of coarse be mostly about Paige but I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of Robyn and Aaron content recorded here.

Well in March we moved out of our lovely little home. Leaving behind some awesome neighbors and Paige's favorite neighborhood attraction, the yellow slide.

It was a little frustrating for Paige as she was often

without clean clothes that matched... very important to a 21 month old!

We spent some time throwing rocks into the stream,and this seamed to help pass the time.

I will just pause to fill you in on some non pictured events. during the month of April we spent some time in our friends Nathan and Katie Troxel's house while they were in Vancouver. Then we moved into Robyn's parents house, where we spent the rest of the month. We took possession of our new home on May the 1st, and spent the first week getting it ready to move into (washing walls, painting, and flooring). So that was the first 2 days... then Robyn and I took off to San Francisco with Becky and Gord, while the grandparents took care of the kids. How awesome was that? REALLY AWESOME!

We went sight seeing and found some pretty cheep tickets for a Giants game which was so cool because three of the four of us had never been to a Major league baseball game before. The best part of the whole thing was that we did it on a whim, and the Giants had a come back victory, so it was a great experience.

Gord and I had a chance to visit the "Rock."
And we tested the Bay waters... I think Gord's expression tells what that was like.

Robyn celebrated her 28th Birthday, and was showered with gifts a plenty.

If I may be so bold I would say that Paige and I gave her the best gift.

We got creative with Paige's room and Robyn painted these cool flowers on the walls.

Paige took in the Sam Steele days parade and really enjoyed it, I got to see the parade from a different perspective... I got to be a cave man with some of the Young Life kids, it was a ton of fun.

This past weekend we went camping with our friends the Hephers and Gord and Becky. The kids loved it and played so well together. Mike and Anie's son Finn is Paige's best friend so it was so great to see them together, the only contentious issue was over a couple of pool noodles, not bad for 2 year olds!

Home on the Range

So I realize that it has been a while since we posted last... BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN FRANTICALLY LOOKING FOR A HOME! Well our search is over, we have decided to be nomadic sheep hearders in the high Rockies.
Paige loves those wooly beasts!

Actually we are only going to be nomadic for the month of April, and then on May 1st we will roost like there is no tomorrow in our new home. Thanks to all of you who offered various basements, sheds, and VW vans -- it's the thought that counts............ really! Here is a picture of the front of the house.

Homeless and Pregnant

Yes, both statements are true of the family Hansen. As of Friday Feb 2nd our house was sold, and as of Saturday Feb 3rd Robyn entered into the second trimester of her withchildness which means that we are telling everyone we know about the good news. So these are two very exciting and nerve racking things happening to us these days. We knew we wanted a second child, and after seeing how much stuff babies somehow manage to bring with them into the world we decided that we would like search for a larger house. We loved our house, and especially loved the street we lived on, we will be sad to them behind, but excited for where we will go next.

A Happy Pop Pop Day

I love Paige's little voice and her words, they are so cute. Today's word is "Pop pop" which translated means popcorn. We sat together on the couch and ate pop pop and watched The Fox and the Hound today. Paige was pretty happy about that. Here are some pictures of her, she is PDC. (Pretty Darn Cute)

the one and only, cute paige hansen, has a favorite. her cousin kayla. paige just can't get enough of her! she'll walk around the house saying 'kayla, kayla, kayla....' over and over again. all babies are now named 'kayla' as well! it seems kayla is getting used to all of this attention, and doesn't scream anymore when paige tries to hug her. it's pretty cute!

The Great Mouse Hunt

So an exciting thing happened yesterday morning at about 6:45am. Robyn and I did our usual routine of getting up that morning, I went into Paige's room to get her out of her crib and change her diaper, and Robyn went into the kitchen to get Paige her morning cup of milk. Now this morning was a little more unusual in that the night before Robyn had been imprisoned on our couch by a mouse who was running around on the floor. It was with that knowledge that we started our day, and what a start it was. Seconds after lifting Paige from her crib we heard three loud shrieks from the kitchen. When Robyn had entered the kitchen she turned on a light, and as she did that the mouse ran right past her toes and under our oven, not the best thing to get rid of the morning groggies but it definitely did the trick. So with no mouse traps in the house I took it upon myself to defend our home from this little invader who will be from here on referred to as Charlie. Knowing that it was still in the kitchen, I closed off all the exits, and proceeded to remove hiding spots. Charlie made his move from his hideout, and I grabbed the nearest thing I had to sub machine gun... my trusty "Oscar" broom. Robyn said that she could tell every time Charlie came into the open because I started crashing and banging things spazmaticly with "Os." I finally coaxed him into the open and corralled him in an open corner where I unleashed a payload hurt with old "Os," after which I pulled out my field knife, an empty corn can, and beat him with that just to make sure. The results, Aaron and Oscar 1, Charlie... dead!
In the heat of battle one gets a little carried away and I forgot to take pictures afterwards. I was more concerned with Paige trying to play dead little Charlie than with documenting the event. The above Photo is just a reenactment for the sake of this blog.

Post New Year

It has been a while since our last post, and honestly, we haven't taken a lot of pictures since Christmas. I had the week between Christmas and New Years off which was a great time of relaxing and enjoying time with family. We snored in the new year which was awesome, and spent New Years day sledding with friends. I'm pretty sure we did other things that week ... but I can't really remember what. We traveled to Rockridge Canyon on Jan 3rd and spent five days being together with Young Life staff from across Canada. It was a great time to reconnect some friends we had made over the summer and we had some great teaching and seminars throughout the week. Hope you are having a great new year. Please enjoy the few pictures we have to share with you.

What is a daddy daughter day (DDD) with out spending a little $$ to have some great fun. This morning we went to CT and bought a cool new sled for Paige. It's one of those wood sleds that sit off the ground and have the railing around them. Although I have already managed to tip her over she assures me she is still having fun.
We are going to Laurie Middle school today at lunch to help out with "summer days," we are sponsoring a team called the Power Rangers. Paige thinks it’s a lot of fun.

Icicles on Branches

I have been fascinated by the icicles which are forming on our tree in the back. Truth be told I don't think icicles are a good sign because it means that your roof isn't insulated and ventilated properly, but they look cool anyways. Our icicles form on the branches our tree encasing all they come in contact with.
I was thinking that this is sort of like how we are before we meet Jesus. We all were stuck in an eternal winter, not unlike the one C.S. Lewis describes in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Here we sit trapped, unable to live life the way it is meant to be lived.
But for some strange reason God has chosen to unthaw us, to warm us with the light of His Son, Jesus. We didn't know we needed to be unthawed, we didn't even ask to be, but God does it just the same.
One day the life that is in these little buds will burst out and enjoy it's life on the tree, the same as we burst out into the new life God has given us, no longer to be trapped inside an icicle.

One Winters Day

She played in the snow with her favorite ball.

But a big gust of wind came and blew it away. Paige chased after it.

She wandered the neighborhood looking for her ball...

but it was nowhere to be found=:(

So today I was unable to find Paige. She likes to hide herself now, and is starting to get quite good at it, although she still thinks we can't see her when she covers her eyes. I sure like the spot she chose to hide today. I am pretty sure she will be a champion hide and seek player when she is older, making her parents very rich or something.
Anyways, It is daddy daughter day today and I think we are going to go x-country skiing.
